No. 1 Northwest Missouri State posted a statement win Thursday evening in Joplin 96-75 over No. 14 Missouri Southern.
The Bearcats (23-1, 13-1 MIAA) handed the Lions (18-5, 11-3 MIAA) their largest loss of the season, and increased their lead in the MIAA to two games over MSSU.
Southern led Northwest for the first 5:06 of the game, with their largest advantage growing to six points.
The Bearcats' first lead of the night came on a Ryan Welty jump with 11:37 left in the first half. Northwest wouldn't trail again in the game.
It was a 47-39 advantage at halftime that Missouri Southern trimmed to two points early in the second half, but Northwest went on a 13-2 run to begin to pull away. The 'Cats also closed the game on a 13-3 run over the final 3:58.
Trevor Hudgins led all scorers with 33 points, his second straight outing with more than 30 points.
Ryan Hawkins put up a double-double for the seventh time this season scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Luke Waters posted a career-high 19 points in the win.
Diego Bernard also filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, six assists and five rebounds.
Northwest is on the road again Saturday facing Pittsburg State. Tip off is set for 3:30pm. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 begins at 3pm.
